Report: Wizards 'increasingly optimistic' about re-signing Paul Pierce

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

After setting the playoffs ablaze, Paul Pierce might return for an encore performance with the Washington Wizards.

Pierce declined his player option worth $5.5 million with the Wizards, but those in Washington are growing increasingly confident in bringing him back, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

In addition to the Wizards, Pierce has been linked to the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers. The ties there are obvious - he spent 15 seasons in Celtic green, including nine under Doc Rivers, who now coaches in Los Angeles.

Despite being 37, Pierce reminded the world of his clutch shot-making abilities with a thrilling run through the postseason. He averaged 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in the playoffs while shooting 52.4 percent from deep on 3.3 makes per game. He drained a smattering of clutch buzzer-beating shots and mercilessly clowned the Toronto Raptors and their ambassador, Drake.

Reports suggest that it's extremely likely Pierce intends to return for an 18th season, but his destination is unclear.

Of the three options, Los Angeles gives him the best shot at title contention, but they're pressed for resources and could only offer something like the taxpayer mid-level exception.

Returning to the Celtics would make for a sentimental closing chapter to his career, and they could pay him what he deserves, but they're too young to make noise in the playoffs.

That leaves the Wizards, who can match Pierce's price while giving him a viable path to yet another postseason run. Pierce fits in seamlessly with his ability to play both the 3 and 4, and is an adored veteran presence for the up-and-coming team.
