Sharks acquire goaltender Jones from Bruins
San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Jose Sharks acquired goaltender Martin Jones from the Boston Bruins on Tuesday for unsigned forward prospect Sean Kuraly and a first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
"Martin was at the top of our list of players that we had targeted," said Sharks general manager Doug Wilson. "We're extremely excited to have him on board."
The Bruins got Jones on Friday as part of the trade that sent forward Milan Lucic to the Los Angeles Kings.
The Sharks opened a spot in goal when Antti Niemi's negotiating rights were traded to the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Jones will compete with Alex Stalock, Niemi's backup this past season, for the starting job.
In 2014-15, the 25-year-old Jones went 4-5-2 with a 2.25 GAA, .906 save percentage and three shutouts in 15 games. In 34 games in parts of two seasons with the Kings, Jones is 16-11-2 with a 1.99 GAA, .923 save percentage and seven shutouts.
Kuraly was originally drafted by San Jose in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Draft and is entering his senior season with Miami University.
