Semin was placed on unconditional waivers Tuesday, and the Hurricanes are expected to buy out his contract, NHL.com reports.

Analysis:

If he clears waivers as expected, Semin will be bought out by the team Wednesday afternoon. The 31-year-old has three years remaining on the five-year, $35 million extension he inked with Carolina in March of 2013., but vastly underachieved before the Hurricanes opted to the pull the plug. Semin tallied only six goals and 13 assists in 57 games in 2014-15. Despite those struggles, he could still provide some scoring punch on the second or third line for a team with better forward depth than the Hurricanes.
