Report: Draymond Green not scheduling meetings until talking with Warriors

Maybe the championship parade sold him.

Despite claims that he wants to enjoy his first turn at free agency, Draymond Green is not scheduling his week like someone intent on making a move.

The restricted free agent will meet with the Golden State Warriors when free agency officially opens on Wednesday, and if all goes well, that may be his only meeting of the summer. Green has opted not to schedule meetings with any other teams before sitting down with the Warriors first, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, and he won't add any to his docket if Wednesday plays out smoothly.

And it should, as there's been little bluffing from either side that they don't want to reach a long-term agreement. Green said after the NBA Finals that he didn't "want to pretend I'm going anywhere," and the Warriors have long maintained that they'd match any offer sheet Green signed.

They can avoid that scenario entirely by locking Green up before he signs an offer sheet, possibly with a five-year maximum contract. Such a deal would pay him an estimated $90.7 million, likely pushing the Warriors into the luxury tax, since Klay Thompson's near-max extension kicks in next season, too.

The Warriors have said they're willing to be a tax team next season, but they may still try to work out a contract for Green at a slight discount below the max. Green may also prefer a shorter-term max, allowing him to re-enter free agency in a more fortuitous cap environment before his 30th birthday.

Should they get too cute negotiating, and Green does end up taking meetings, he'll have ample suitors. His hometown Detroit Pistons have been considered a Plan B of sorts, while the Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets are also expected to get in the conversation.

The 25-year-old Green was the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player this season, surprising even head coach Steve Kerr with how substantial a role he carved out during David Lee's early-season absence. Along with providing elite and incredibly versatile defense, Green averaged 11.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 79 regular-season games while knocking down 33.7 percent of his looks from outside. Save for a short slump to begin the NBA Finals, he rarely slowed down.

As with most max-level restricted free agents, the most likely case is that Green returns to Golden State, and does so quickly.
