Report: Pelicans to push Davis to sign 5-year, $143M extension

While teams desirous to land a top free agent this summer will begin the process of enticement on Wednesday, the New Orleans Pelicans will be looking to lock up their franchise player, according to reports.

The Pelicans will begin a push to sign Anthony Davis to a five-year, $143-million extension, according to John Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. This echoes reports from April, as the Pels look to try and lock down a star who has already become a top-five player in the NBA after just three seasons.

The team would have until Oct. 31 to convince Davis to sign a five-year deal.

Davis is scheduled to become a restricted free agent next summer, but locking him up now would keep the league's best power forward in New Orleans through at least 2021.

Brow's stats don't lie: Davis's 24.4 points per game this season ranked fourth in the NBA and his 10.2 rebounds placed him eighth. He led the league in blocks per game (2.9) and player efficiency rating (30.8).

Beyond attempting to lock up Davis long term, the Pelicans will be trying to retain center Omer Asik this summer, who the team is high on despite his playoff struggles.
