Cole re-signed Monday with the Penguins to a three-year, $6.3 million contract, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Analysis:

The Penguins' acquisition of Cole on March 2 was one of quieter moves of trade deadline day, but it proved to be a vital one for Pittsburgh. With the team down several key defensemen due to injury late in the season, Cole came through in a big way, accruing seven points in a seven-game stretch from March 26 through April 7. The Pens' blue-line ranks should be healthier heading into 2015-16, but Cole likely solidified himself as a regular member of the team's second or third pairing due to his play.
