American League Game Summary - Seattle at LA Angels of Anaheim
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kole Calhoun scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th, sending the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
Johnny Giavotella and Calhoun started the inning with consecutive singles off Tom Wilhelmsen (1-2). After Mike Trout was intentionally walked to load the bases, Albert Pujols grounded into a double play -- shortstop to home to first. Calhoun then raced home on Wilhelmsen's wild pitch.
"A great win for the team," said Calhoun. "There's a lot of ways to score a run. Fortunately the ball got past (Mike) Zunino and we won the game."
Both starting pitchers were outstanding. Seattle starter Felix Hernandez gave up just one hit while striking out eight over six scoreless innings. Hector Santiago, on the other hand, allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.
"Felix had heat exhaustion. He ran out of gas," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon. "It was a tough day."
Trevor Gott (1-0) tossed a perfect 10th to pick up his first win in the majors.
The Mariners broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Franklin Gutierrez singled, moved to second when Robinson Cano walked and raced home on Nelson Cruz's double to right-center field. Kyle Seager lined out and Mark Trumbo struck out swinging to keep it 1-0.
The Angels were happy to see Charlie Furbush take over for Hernandez in the seventh. David Freese was hit by a pitch before being replaced on the basepaths by Kyle Kubitza, who advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Mark Lowe came in from the bullpen pinch-hitter Erick Aybar greeted him with an RBI single to left. Joe Beimel got Efren Navarro to ground into a double play.
Beimel, however, gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth. Taylor Featherston singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and raced home on Calhoun's single to center. Trout was intentionally walked to put men on first and second. Carson Smith got the final two outs of the inning to keep it 2-1.
Seattle tied things up on Seager's two-out homer off Huston Street in the ninth. It was Street's third blown save of the season.
