Scott Gomez won't be re-signed by Devils: 'I know I can play at this level'

Scott Gomez is looking for work once again after the veteran center's agent was informed by New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero that the 35-year-old won't be re-signed by the club.

Gomez, however, doesn't see the decision as the end of the line.

"It is what it is," he told Tom Gulitti of Fire and Ice. "The thing is I know I can play. I've proven that. I know I can play at this level. I know I can contribute. But, it's time to focus on somewhere else."

The former first-round pick signed a one-year, $550,000 contract last summer and appeared in 58 games with the Devils in 2014-15, recording seven goals and 27 assists with a 47.1 Corsi For rating at even strength.

Gomez credits Adam Oates with helping him rediscover his game when the Hall of Fame center joined the Devils' coaching staff last season, and believes he still has plenty of gas in the tank.

"The thing also it says 35 on my age, but I didn't play much the last couple years so the body is fresh as can be," he said. "It's not like I'm some old 35-year-old guy. I'm excited. I'm excited to take what I learned from Oatsie last year and keep it going. There's no question I can help a team out."

Gomez will become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
