Texans' Tom Savage eager to move past disappointing NFL debut

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Tom Savage's NFL debut didn't go the way he hoped it would.

It was Week 15 and the Houston Texans were in Indianapolis to take on the Colts. Savage was forced into the game in the second quarter after starter Ryan Fitzpatrick broke his leg on an attempted scramble, and proceeded to fumble on his first play.

It only got worse from there. The Texans ended up losing the game 17-10 and Savage finished 10-of-19 for 127 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

"It's tough," Savage told Texans Radio. "I'm not going to lie to you and say I don't think about it."

Savage is currently beneath Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer on the depth chart, but Texans head coach Bill O'Brien sees a bright future ahead for him.

"I think if he keeps making steady progress, he's got a chance," O'Brien said.

That progress likely has a lot to do with Savage feeling more comfortable with the offense.

"I think this year I'm putting a lot more work in with the film aspect of it," Savage said. "Last year, I was just trying to study the plays and figure out what everyone was doing and where everyone was supposed to be. Now that I know that, I think being able to understand tendencies. I still got to be able to anticipate things better and throw the ball quicker."
