Braves' Freeman receives PRP injection for ailing wrist

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves remain cautiously optimistic Freddie Freeman will return prior to the All-Star break after prescribing the first baseman a platelet-rich-plasma injection in his wrist to speed up the recovery.

The two-time All-Star was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a wrist contusion after attempting to play through discomfort for about a week. Despite the PRP treatment, Freeman's not expected to come off the DL when he's eligible July 3, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.

After getting examined by a hand specialist in the clubhouse June 17, Freeman said he took a cortisone shot to help alleviate the pain. The injury kept him out of the lineup the following night, snapping the longest consecutive games streak in the majors at 234 contests.

The 25-year-old is batting .299/.367/.520 with a team-leading 12 homers and 41 RBIs.
