The writing appears to be on the wall concerning Ryan O'Reilly's future with the Colorado Avalanche.

While general manager Joe Sakic had said he would like to sign the center to a long-term deal prior to the start of next season, it's believed the team likely isn't willing to meet O'Reilly's salary demands, thereby prompting a trade.

The 24-year-old has one year remaining on a contract that will see him earn $6 million in 2015-16, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Colorado may have tipped its hand Thursday with the acquisition of Carl Soderberg's rights from the Boston Bruins.

The Avalanche are already talking to the Swedish center - an impending UFA reportedly seeking $5 million per season - about a new contract, which would give the club depth at the position potentially vacated by O'Reilly.

O'Reilly recorded 17 goals and 38 assists last season, with a Corsi For rating of 46 at even strength.
