NFC South Notebook: Newton pays visit to Charleston victims; Benson family appeals competency ruling

Carolina Panthers

Newton visits Charleston victims. Cam Newton visited the families of the victims of the Charleston shooting on Monday. Nine people were killed at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Panthers' quarterback paid his respects, speaking out on the tragedy.

Funchess aiming for Rookie of the Year. Devin Funchess will get his fair share of targets after the Panthers selected him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Funchess said he's aiming to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, which isn't an outlandish goal considering his role in the offense.

Panthers lobby to get rid of Confederate flag. In the wake of the Charleston murders, the Panthers lobbied for the removal of the Confederate flag in South Carolina's Capitol building, located in the state's capital city of Columbia.

New Orleans Saints

Benson's family appeals competency ruling. Saints owner Tom Benson was declared mentally competent to conduct his own affairs, an assertion his family vehemently disagreed with. The Benson family filed an appeal over the decision.

Browner excelling in training camp. Brandon Browner was a member of the last two Super Bowl champions, and is putting in a championship performance in practice with the Saints. Wide receiver Joe Morgan said Browner is playing at an All-Pro level thus far.

Kikaha starred in judo before football. Linebacker Hau'oli Kikaha aims to bring a lot of players to the ground, and practiced judo before playing football. Kikaha said judo was a prerequisite before he could play football at his high school.

Atlanta Falcons

Falcons invite Herschel Walker to training camp. The Falcons invited 53-year-old Herschel Walker to their training camp. Not as a coach or guest speaker, but to actually play for the team. Head coach Dan Quinn admires the former running back and is presenting him with a shot to crack the roster and become the oldest player in league history.

Will Moeaki solve team woes at tight end? Tony Moeaki signed with the Falcons in the offseason, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter examines whether he's the answer at tight end.

Ex-Falcon Samuel starts record label. Former Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel founded a record label titled Eighties Nation Records. Samuel is targeting William Moore to join his company once he retires from football.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Sapp charged with 3 counts of domestic violence. Former Buccaneers defensive lineman Warren Sapp was charged with three counts of domestic violence, stemming from an April 28 incident at a Las Vegas hotel. This isn't Sapp's first run-in with the law, after being cited for soliciting and assaulting multiple prostitutes in February.

Alstott praises Winston for professionalism. Jameis Winston drew praise from former Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott due to his professionalism. Alstott said Winston texted him to wish him a Happy Father's Day, a gesture appreciated by the six-time Pro Bowler.

Winston looking forward to facing Watt. Never one to back down from a challenge, Jameis Winston said the opponent he's looking most forward to facing is reigning Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. Be careful what you wish for, Jameis.
