Report: Atletico Madrid have shown interest in securing Chicharito

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez could reportedly be staying in the Spanish capital, albeit featuring for a new club.

Atletico Madrid are interested in the Mexican forward, according to FOX Sports, as Real Madrid have reportedly decided not to use the purchase option in his contract following a disappointing season-long loan from Manchester United.

Real Madrid had an option to buy Chicharito, who has one year left on his contract, for a reported €10 million. Forgoing the option means he's set to return to United, where manager Louis van Gaal appears to have no interest in rolling the dice on the out-of-favour player.

As the 2014-15 season wore on, it became more and more clear that Chicharito wouldn't be continuing at the Estadio Bernabeu beyond the campaign. He only started seven La Liga fixtures and was normally used as a substitute when Real Madrid were taking on a Spanish minnow.

Of course, what makes the potential crosstown move even more interesting is that Hernandez's biggest moment of the season came against Atleti, when he finally got the chance to start in a meaningful fixture for Real Madrid. He went on to score a 90th-minute goal that eliminated Diego Simeone's side in the quarterfinals.
