Premier League fixtures 2015/16: Chelsea open title defence at home to Swansea City

Reuters

The Premier League champions will open the season at home as Chelsea begin their title defence when they host Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on August 8.

Manchester United's clash with Tottenham, however, is the highlight of the opening day of fixtures as all 20 Premier League teams kick off the 2015/16 season and begin their quest for the title.

The full slate of matches in England's top flight was revealed Wednesday, with the usual high-profile matches garnering attention and filling supporters with confidence that perhaps this is the year their club earns the right to hoist the Premier League trophy when the season concludes May 16, 2016.

10 Notable Fixtures:

AFC Bournemouth vs. Aston Villa - Aug. 8

The opening day marks an historic moment for AFC Bournemouth when they participate in their first match in the top flight of English football when they host Aston Villa.

Manchester City vs. Chelsea - Aug. 15

The second week of fixtures will feature an early season blockbuster match when Manchester City hosts Chelsea in a meeting between two favourites to win the league. Let's hope there's a winner in this one after both matches last season produced 1-1 results.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool - Sept. 12

Manchester United and Liverpool continues to be one of the most highly anticipated fixtures of the season, no matter how far the pair have fallen from the top of the table. Liverpool will be out for redemption after losing both matches last season by a combined score of 5-1.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal - Sept. 19

Forget about Arsenal's Premier League drought, the north London club will be desperate to snap their losing streak against Chelsea when they travel to Stamford Bridge. Arsenal will hope to register a win against their city rivals for the first time since 2011.

Manchester United vs. Manchester City - Oct. 24

Louis van Gaal's men will enter the Manchester derby full of confidence following last season's decisive 4-2 win at Old Trafford. If it wasn't for Chris Smalling's moment of madness at the Etihad Stadium which left United down a man, perhaps the Red Devils could have done the double for the first time in the league since the 2008/09 campaign.

Arsenal vs. Tottenham - Nov. 7

The first edition of the north London derby will be the annual litmus test for Tottenham to determine if they're any closer to catching their biggest rivals after 20 seasons of finishing behind Arsenal in the standings. Another heroic performance from Harry Kane would certainly help following his two-goal display to sink Arsenal at White Hart Lane last year.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool - Jan. 12

Old Premier League foes, Arsenal and Liverpool, will meet at Anfield in what should be an entertaining meeting between two teams desperate to end their Premier League title drought. If history has taught us anything, this should be a high-scoring affair following a pair of games last year that ended 2-2 and 4-1 in Arsenal's favour.

Chelsea vs. Manchester United - Feb. 6

Despite failing to register a victory, Louis van Gaal was surely pleased with his team's ability to limit Chelsea's relentless attack. A summer of signings should see the gap between the two clubs shrink and, hopefully, produce a memorable final encounter of the season.

Liverpool vs. Everton - Feb. 27

Notoriously one of the most violent fixtures of the year, supporters will be optimistic the Merseyside derby produces better results following last year's pair of lackluster draws. Anfield will be rocking, as usual, when Liverpool host Everton in the final league meeting between the two bitter rivals.

Manchester City vs. Arsenal - May 7

Could this be the fixture that determines a new Premier League champion? Probably not, if Chelsea have anything to say about it, but it is the type of late season match-up that supporters crave. Arsenal might struggle to duplicate their rare season of dominance against City if the 2013 champs successfully reload this summer and steam toward its third title in five seasons.
