New York City FC acquired some veteran help on the back line Tuesday with the signing of Andoni Iraola.

The 32-year-old defender joins the Major League Soccer club on a free transfer following a lengthy career with Athletic Bilbao.

He'll be available to appear in his first MLS game July 8, when the league's secondary transfer window opens and he obtains the proper paperwork to play in the United States, his new team announced.

“I have only played for one club throughout my whole career and I knew after leaving Bilbao my first choice was always to play in the U.S. and in New York,” Iraola said.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity for me to join New York City FC in our inaugural season. This is a team with huge potential, passionate supporters, and I really wanted to be part of it."

Iraola joins fellow Spaniard David Villa on the league's newest team, and relishes the opportunity to play with the Spanish national team's all-time leading scorer.

“For me it will be very nice playing with David Villa. We’ve crossed paths on the national team, we have played against each other many times, but being able to play with him in the league and fight together is extra motivation for me."

Iraola made 510 appearances during his 12 years in Bilbao, finding the back of the net 38 times. He's also earned seven caps for his country.
