Jonas Gutierrez on release coming via phone call: 'It made me think they don't care'

Jonas Gutierrez isn't done with his criticism of Newcastle United.

After tweeting in May to slam owner Mike Ashley for a lack of support during his battle with testicular cancer, the 31-year-old midfielder opened up Sunday about how he was released by the club.

Gutierrez, who scored in Newcastle's final match of the season to help the club avoid relegation, stated to BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek that he was on a coaching course with former teammate Ryan Taylor when ex-caretaker manager John Carver phoned to inform the pair they had been released.

"I think man-to-man, face-to-face is the nice thing to do," Gutierrez said, according to BBC Sport.

"It made me think they don't care about anything."

Gutierrez made his long-awaited return to the pitch in April after the cancer sidelined him for a year-and-a-half, and he believes there were other ways Newcastle could have delivered the news.

"I had been there seven years," Gutierrez said. "I always did my best. The only 18 months I didn't play was because I was going through my illness. Maybe they could have told me before the end of the season so I could say thank you to the fans on the pitch after the last game."
