Manchester Monarchs defeat Utica Comets to win Calder Cup
The Manchester Monarchs are the 2015 Calder Cup champions.
Manchester, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Utica Comets 2-1 on Saturday to claim the AHL's grandest prize.
Adrian Kempe and Vincent LoVerde each scored a goal for the Monarchs in the first period.
Manchester clamped down on the 2-0 lead until 14.3 seconds left in the third period when the Comets made it interesting after a goal from Cal O'Reilly.
Jordan Weal, a third round selection of the Kings in 2010 was named most valuable player.
Manchester dominated the Atlantic division in the regular season, recording 109 points after a 50-win season and lost just four games throughout the entire postseason.
The win couldn't have come at more of a surreal time for the franchise, as they get set to relocate to Ontario, Calif. next season.
