Franck Ribery's return is up in the air following discouraging news about the Bayern Munich midfielder's injured ankle.

The German champions provided a bleak update Friday, saying the injury has failed to progress at the expected rate and that Ribery's right foot has been immobilised for the time being.

"The conservative therapy pursued to date in the case of Franck Ribery has unfortunately not led to the desired results. After a further medical examination by Prof. Dr. Walther, the player's right ankle has now been immobilised," a statement read on the team's website.

There is no estimate for his return to football activities.

Ribery has been sidelined with the injury since March when he suffered the ailment during a Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk.
