Report: Alouettes receiver Mardy Gilyard arrested for marijuana possession

The Montreal Alouettes announced Monday that import receiver Mardy Gilyard was arrested for simple possession of marijuana on Monday morning.

The Montreal Gazette reports that Gilyard was arrested Monday when a police officer detected the smell of marijuana in his car. Police searched the vehicle and found 59 grams in his possession.

The Alouettes' release stated that the team “doesn’t condone this type of behaviour from any employee. The club will allow the justice system to render a verdict and will act accordingly.”

Gilyard was ruled out for the 2015 season after tearing his Achilles at training camp last week, and only made one appearance in 2014 before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury.

The former NFL fourth-round pick appeared in court Monday afternoon and was released with no special conditions, his lawyer told the Gazette. He will appear once again in Sherbrooke, Quebec on September 14.
