Report: Cavs tried to land Prigioni at trade deadline

David Richard / USA TODAY Sports

In some parallel universe, perhaps it was Pablo Prigioni hounding Steph Curry into a historically bad shooting night in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, while Matthew Dellavedova looked on.

At the trade deadline back in February, the Cleveland Cavaliers made a serious attempt to land the 38-year-old point guard, a source told Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Dellavedova was struggling badly, and the Cavs were presumably looking to shore up their shaky point guard depth and possibly find a better alternative behind Kyrie Irving.

Prigioni, who was plying his trade for the New York Knicks at the time, was dealt to the Houston Rockets instead, in exchange for Alexey Shved and two second-round draft picks.

Things worked out OK for both sides. Prigioni did a commendable, if unspectacular, job for the Rockets, soaking up some of the minutes vacated by the injured Patrick Beverley. And Dellavedova has been a revelation for the Cavs in the playoffs, submitting perhaps the finest defensive performance of his life and burying the game-winning free throws in Sunday's Game 2 against the Golden State Warriors, while starting in Irving's place.

The Cavs could use the added point guard depth now, with Irving out for the remainder of the Finals, but the additional responsibility has agreed with Dellavedova, and the fact that Cleveland has nowhere else to turn has perhaps emboldened him.
