Welcome back to La Liga, Sporting de Gijon!

The final matchday of the Segunda Division season saw Abelardo Fernandez's side claim a 3-0 win at already promoted Real Betis, confirming their return to the top flight of Spanish football.

Sporting's promotion came in dramatic fashion - and at the expense of Girona FC, who believed they had reached the promised land when Florian Lejeune headed home what appeared to be a winning goal, deep into second-half stoppage time versus CD Lugo.

However, Lejeune's goal was called off after the linesman's flag was raised, sparking angry scenes at the Estadi Montilivi that saw the assistant referee struck by a bottle.

Girona will now have to attempt to reach La Liga via the promotion play-offs that also include UD Las Palmas, Real Valladolid, and Real Zaragoza.

Throughout their long history, Sporting have floated back and forth between Spain's top two divisions. They were last relegated from La Liga in 2011-12.
