Matt O'Connor interested in similar path to NHL as Lightning's Bishop

Matt O'Connor sees a little bit of himself in Ben Bishop.

The 6-foot-6 O'Connor - a recent signee by the Ottawa Senators - isn't just comparing his height to the Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender - who stands 6-foot-7 - either.

"Watching goalies like him develop, taking a similar path, from Maine University - a team I played against the last three years - it’s exciting to be part of a development path, which is what you really want and work for," O'Connor told Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen.

O'Connor, a Boston University standout who may be best remembered for allowing a blooper reel goal in the national championship to Providence, will likely begin the season with the AHL's Binghamton Senators.

With Craig Anderson, Andrew Hammond, and Robin Lehner ahead of him on the depth charts for at least the time being, he'll need to be patient and wait for his opportunity like Bishop did early in his career.

Bishop spent 23 games with the Senators after failed stints with the St. Louis Blues. In April 2013, he was sent to the Lightning for Cory Conacher and a fourth-round pick, a deal that has since been a one-sided win for Tampa Bay.
