Missouri legislators sue Gov. Jay Nixon over proposed Rams stadium funding

The City of St. Louis remains intent on keeping the Rams in town despite ownership's apparent efforts to relocate the club to Los Angeles, but proposals to do so by way of public funding may prove complicated.

State legislators are suing Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and the Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority over his ability to extend bonds on the Rams' current stadium to pay for the proposed riverfront stadium, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

The lawsuit reportedly claims that Nixon extending the bonds on the Edward Jones Dome and constructing a new stadium with taxpayer money is illegal.

The Rams, one of three NFL teams currently in the running for a Los Angeles relocation prior to the 2016 season, were previously thought to be the franchise most likely to find a stadium solution locally, making a move unnecessary.

While it's unclear how the lawsuit will change that dynamic in relation to the proposed stadium's funding plans, the organization's future remains up in the air either way.

The Rams have called St. Louis home for the past 20 seasons after relocating from Los Angeles in 1995.
