Hull City relegated from Premier League; Newcastle survives

Hull City is going back to the Championship, and Geordies everywhere are celebrating as a result.

The Premier League's thrilling relegation battle between Hull and Newcastle went down to the wire, but once the dust settled from Sunday's slate of season-ending matches, it was the latter who were left standing. Hull, meanwhile, found themselves in the dreaded position of knowing that their two-year soiree in England's top flight has come to an end.

The Magpies ensured their safety with a 2-0 victory over West Ham at St. James' Park, a score which rendered Hull's result against Manchester United - regardless of what it was - useless. As it turns out, it was a goalless draw.

A powerful 54th-minute header from Moussa Sissoko - who got onto the end of a perfect cross from Jonas Gutierrez - gave Newcastle the lead in their contest, before Gutierrez, who, incredibly, returned to the pitch earlier this season after overcoming testicular cancer, ensured their safety with a second goal in the 85th minute.

To be sure, there wasn't a dry eye in the house after the Argentine found the net.

The situation in the stands was much the same at the KC Stadium, but obviously, for very different reasons. Hull City supporters, listening to the concurrent Newcastle contest on the radio, reacted as one would expect upon hearing the news of Sissoko's goal:

Steve Bruce and company knew coming into the final weekend that their fate did not rest in their own hands, and ultimately they were powerless to overturn what has been a season-long showing of ineptitude.

As for Newcastle, the fact that they were in this position to begin with is nothing short of a miraculous. Heading into Sunday's contest, the club had won just two of their 18 Premier League matches since the calendar turned to 2015, thus thrusting themselves into the relegation battle.

Ultimately, they did just enough to scrape by - likely taking many years off the life expectancy of their fans in the process.
