Blue Jays place Devon Travis on 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation

The Toronto Blue Jays sent one of their most promising rookies to the disabled list after Thursday's game, opening up a spot on the 25-man roster for one of the organization's most popular characters.

Following an 8-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, the Blue Jays placed second baseman Devon Travis on the 15-day disabled list after the 24-year-old was omitted from the lineup for a fifth consecutive game due to left shoulder inflammation. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of infielder Munenori Kawasaki from Triple-A Buffalo.

Travis has battled discomfort since taking a ground ball off his left collarbone in Cleveland on April 30, but appeared in 14 consecutive games this month before being shut down Saturday. Absent from the lineup since the weekend, his stint on the disabled list will be retroactive to May 17.

Kawasaki, meanwhile, will join the Blue Jays after hitting .232/.354/.290 with four stolen bases in 22 games with the Buffalo Bisons this season. The eccentric 33-year-old has endeared himself to Blue Jays fans over the last few seasons, appearing in 178 games for Toronto since the beginning of 2013.

Kawasaki will likely serve as a left-handed complement to Steve Tolleson in a platoon at second base while Travis is on the disabled list.
