Blue Jays' Danny Valencia day-to-day after spraining ankle on dugout steps

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Blue Jays need to start watching their step.

Veteran infielder Danny Valencia is day-to-day after spraining his ankle while tripping on the dugout steps following Monday's game against the New York Yankees.

He'll be unavailable Tuesday and his status for Wednesday is uncertain. With that, Valencia joins two other key players in the watch-where-you're-stepping club.

On Day 1 of spring training, the Blue Jays saw newcomer Michael Saunders go down with a knee injury after he stepped on a sprinkler.

Although he's since returned to the lineup, Saunders is still feeling the repercussions of the injury. He had fluid drained from his knee Monday and received a cortisone shot, which will likely keep him out until Friday.

Shortly after Saunders went down, the Blue Jays lost their best pitcher, Marcus Stroman, to a torn ACL while he was fielding a bunt.
