Vikings exercise 5th-year options on Harrison Smith, Matt Kalil

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings announced their decision to exercise fifth-year options for safety Harrison Smith and left tackle Matt Kalil.

Kalil and Smith were both selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Smith has developed into one of the league's best free safeties, recording 93 tackles, five interceptions, three sacks and a forced fumble in 2014.

Kalil produced an outstanding rookie season for the Vikings and is considered one of the stalwarts of the team's offensive line. However, the former fourth overall pick regressed badly in 2014, allowing 10 sacks in what may have been an anomaly.
