Blue Jays place Reyes on 15-day DL

Despite his best efforts, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes finds himself on the disabled list for a third time in as many seasons.

The four-time All-Star has been battling a cracked rib for the past two weeks and the team placed him on the 15-day DL on Monday.

An MRI on April 17 revealed the injury, as well as a muscle strain, that has prevented the switch-hitter from swinging from the left side of the plate. Reyes had also been wearing a compression jacket to help alleviate some of the pain.

Reyes, who appeared in five straight games for the Blue Jays before the team sat him Sunday to rest, was back in the lineup for the series opener with the Boston Red Sox on Monday. He finished 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

The 13-year veteran was off to an excellent start to the season, though the injury has cooled him off considerably. Reyes hit .324/350/.405 with three doubles through his first 10 games, but is hitting .105/.100/.105 in his last five games.

Toronto recalled infielder Jonathan Diaz from Triple-A Buffalo to take Reyes' place. In 16 games, Diaz is hitting .178/.315/.222 with two doubles and nine strikeouts. The 30-year-old appeared in 23 games for the Jays last season.
