Vikings GM: Cordarrelle Patterson 'has really grown up a lot'

As Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson heads into his third NFL season, and what could very well prove to be a make-or-break year, it appears he's taking some steps in the right direction.

Speaking with Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman indicated that the team is counting on Patterson to play a key role in the offense, and that the young wideout is indeed making progress in his development.

"There’s no question about the physical ability there. I think Cordarrelle has really grown up a lot," Spielman said. "I know what he has done this offseason dedicating himself to being the best receiver he can be, and how serious he is taking that. We’re very excited about the future with Cordarrelle."

Patterson joined the Vikings as a first-round draft selection in 2013, putting together a relatively promising rookie campaign before the disappointing year to follow.

As Spielman explained, there have never been any questions about Patterson's raw athleticism, but rather his ability to grasp the finer points of playing the wide receiver position in the NFL.

Though the 24-year-old will face an uphill battle in recapturing a significant role as part of the Vikings' crowded wide receiver corps, it's those abilities that will most certainly give him the opportunity to do so.

Look for the coaching staff to play to Patterson's strengths in the upcoming season, getting the ball in his hands by any means necessary and allowing him to make plays after the catch.

Now appearing to have found their franchise quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater, the Vikings getting the most out of Patterson's talents would set the offense up for long-term success.
