Report: Dolphins talking up Todd Gurley in hopes of finding draft day trade partner

The Miami Dolphins have been very open about their admiration for Todd Gurley and may even have a shot at drafting the Georgia product with the No. 14 overall pick. But according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Dolphins' interest in Gurley is just a smokescreen.

One source told Kelly that the Dolphins are actively trying to acquire a pick in the second day of the draft, and that there are three teams - the San Diego Chargers (No. 17), Arizona Cardinals (No. 24) and Dallas Cowboys (No. 27) - that may have their sights set on selecting one of the top two running backs.

Those teams could serve as potential trade partners for Miami if they believe they will lose out on Gurley or Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon.

But that's not all. Gurley is also represented by Ari Nissim of Roc Nation Sports, who served as the New York Jets' capologist for eight years and worked directly with Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum.

Nissim and Tannenbaum have remained close since, and Kelly speculates that this could be a "you scratch my back, I scratch yours" situation.

As for the Dolphins' asking price, Kelly reports that for them to move down 13 spots in a trade with Dallas, it would likely cost the Cowboys' first and second-round picks and at least a fourth-rounder.
