Blue Jays activate Saunders from DL; designate Tolleson for assignment

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Michael Saunders is poised to make his Toronto Blue Jays debut this weekend.

The club has activated Saunders from the 15-day disabled list ahead of Saturday's clash with the Tampa Bay Rays, and designated Steve Tolleson for assignment.

Saunders, who was swapped in December in exchange for pitcher J.A. Happ, has not played in the majors this season due to a knee injury he sustained during spring training.

It will be interesting to see how Saunders fits into manager John Gibbons' lineup with Kevin Pillar off to such a hot start, especially defensively.

Saunders hit .273 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 78 games for the Seattle Mariners last season.

Tolleson, 31, hit .200 with a pair of RBIs in six games and was in his second season with Toronto.
