Jets GM Maccagnan: 'I'm not opposed to moving up' but prefer stockpiling picks

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan won't rule out trading up to draft a quarterback, but he says his preference is to trade back.

"Philosophically, I'm not opposed to moving up in the draft," Maccagnan told reporters Friday when asked about the possibility he will make an aggressive push for Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston.

"I would personally like to get more picks," he added, suggesting a trade down is more likely.

Maccagnan hinted that he expects trade talks to heat up in the coming days.

He also dodged a question about whether he sees quarterback as a position of need for the Jets.

Geno Smith is expected to start for the Jets if they don't spend an early pick on a quarterback. Smith endured a rocky sophomore season in 2014, completing 59.7 percent of his passes with a 1.0 touchdown to interception ratio (13 TDs, 13 INTs). As he did as a rookie, Smith showed glimpses of big potential.

Whoever lines up under center for the Jets next season will have better weapons than Smith did last year. The team upgraded its wide receiving corps by trading for veteran receiver Brandon Marshall.
