Marbury on prospect Mudiay: 'Going to be really good, has a big upside'

If you like your scouting tips from people who literally eat Vaseline, do we have a lead for you!

Former NBA player Stephon Marbury was asked about incoming NBA Draft prospect Emmanuel Mudiay, and while his opinion on future NBA talent may not be all that valued, nobody has had a closer look at the 6-foot-5 point guard.

Marbury has spent the past three seasons playing in China and played in the same league as Mudiay this year. The potential top-five pick opted to eschew a season at SMU in order to sign an appreciable contract - with endorsement deal - while he awaited NBA eligibility. Mudiay claims the experience was more of a challenge than college ball, something scouts at least agree with at the mental, if not on-court, level.

Marbury's take was complimentary, albeit mostly boilerplate:

He's a kid who is going to be really good, has a big upside. He's got real potential, started at 18. He can play at a high level. It's about the people around (him), and who he surrounds himself with is important to what goes on in his career.

He's got his own style - fast. He's got a little bit of everybody's game. What I like about him is he can jump and he's big, too, a big guard, more of a tweener. He can't really shoot that well right now, but he's got point-guard skills, sees the floor really well. He's definitely an NBA player. The question that teams want to know is if he'll be impactful for the organization before they invest the top pick. I gave him advice - stay on the right path.

Make your own joke about Marbury giving any young player advice, but he succeeded in the NBA for years and battled through some off-court issues. He's a 38-year-old still getting paid handsomely to play basketball, so he can't be too far off the right path.

As for Muiday, most insiders seem to agree with Marbury's take, and he's in the mix to be the top point guard off the board in June.
