Isaiah Thomas on Lou Williams winning Sixth Man: 'Numbers don't lie'

Looks like the Boston Celtics are none too happy about Toronto Raptors shooting guard Lou Williams winning Sixth Man of the Year.

Instead, the Celtics feel as if Isaiah Thomas, who finished second in voting, should have won.

"(The voting is) not in my control," Thomas told Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston. "Congrats to (Williams). I can't say much about it. All I'm going to say is numbers don't lie. But congrats to him, he deserves it."

Unsurprisingly, Thomas's coach Brad Stevens and teammate Evan Turner backed Thomas for the honor.

"Lou Williams is a very deserving candidate, but (Thomas) would have been my vote," said Stevens.

"(Thomas is) definitely worthy of the award; he played great for us," Turner said. "He was big-time all season. Obviously, if he'd been around all season and we'd finished higher in the (standings), he probably for sure would have got it."

There's an interesting debate to be had between Thomas and Williams. Both players were offense-first, defense-never bench producers that played in rather similar roles. Their numbers are below.

Statistic Williams Thomas
GP 80 67
PPG 15.5 16.4
APG 2.1 4.2
MPG 25.2 25.8
PER 19.9 20.6
TS% 56.4 57.9

There's certainly a case for Thomas. He sparked a playoff push in Boston following a midseason trade and averaged more points and rebounds per game.

Then again, Williams has played in 13 more games than Thomas and was a key contributor to the Raptors setting a new franchise-high in wins.
