Indians' Gomes expected to miss 6-8 weeks with sprained MCL

Injuries are piling up early in the season for the Cleveland Indians.

The club has placed catcher Yan Gomes on the 15-day disabled list with a moderate right MCL sprain and expects him to miss up to eight weeks of action.

Gomes suffered the injury after Detroit Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis slid into his right foot on a force out at home plate on Saturday.

Gomes was 3-for-20 with two runs scored in five games prior to hitting the DL.

The Indians made three other roster moves Sunday, purchasing the contract of right-hander Shaun Marcum from Triple-A Columbus while left-hander Kyle Crockett was demoted to Triple-A. Cleveland also released righty Charles Brewer.

Stud outfielder Michael Brantley is also day-to-day with a back injury.
