Southampton manager Ronald Koeman didn't have an answer when asked about Fraser Forster's return from injury.

While he's already not expected to be between the pipes again this season after injuring his knee, Koeman provided a bleak update on the English goalkeeper's recovery process.

"If you say it's four months, it's seven months, and after seven months you will get the answers about the situation with Fraser," Koeman told reporters ahead of Southampton's match against Everton.

"At least this season (he will be out) and then we will see for the next season. Fraser is down, of course. I spoke to him last week."

Forster suffered the injury during a freak incident when he appeared to land awkwardly on his knee against Burnley in the match's opening minutes.

He was removed from the match and required surgery days later.

Veteran 'keeper Kelvin Davis will likely assume the starting role for the season's final eight games, but the goalkeeper situation heading into next season will be evaluated during the summer if Forster is unable to recover in time.

"Kelvin Davis is a very experienced goalkeeper who played very well against Burnley. He made some fantastic saves and has a lot of experience, which is important for our last eight games of the season.

"We have to make a decision on the goalkeepers at the end of the season and if Fraser is out for a longer time, a new goalkeeper is an option."
