Ed Reed officially announces retirement

Rafael Suanes / US PRESSWIRE

Nine-time Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed is set to announce his retirement after 12 seasons.

He will do so in a press conference at the Baltimore Ravens' training complex at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Reed did not suit up for a club in 2014, last playing for the Houston Texans in 2013. The 36-year-old free safety also played seven games for the New York Jets in 2013.

He is most famous for his contributions to the Baltimore Ravens, playing 11 seasons after being selected 24th overall in the 2002 NFL Draft.

Reed possessed tremendous ball skills and coverage ability, winning NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2004, after recording nine interceptions, 71 tackles, and a sack.

The former Ravens' standout is considered one of the best safeties of his generation alongside Pittsburgh Steelers great Troy Polamalu. Reed retires holding the record for most career interception yards with 1,590.

Reed put quarterbacks on notice with his ability to return interceptions for game-altering touchdowns. The free safety was a tremendous hitter in the open field and was widely considered to be one of the two fulcrums of the Ravens' defense alongside linebacker Ray Lewis.

Lewis and Reed both captured a Super Bowl in 2012, their final seasons with the Ravens.
