A Utah-based tribal leader is facing impeachment for allegedly accepting gifts from Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder.

The Utah Tribal Council alleges that Snyder's gifts likely constitute bribery, and said the chairwoman, Gari Lafferty, acted in her own self-interest as opposed to her constituents'.

Washington's nickname has sparked outrage from a number of public interest groups, with multiple Native American organizations demanding that the franchise change its moniker.

Snyder has refused to change the team's name and allegedly provided Lafferty with gifts in order to earn her support for the team's efforts to keep its name.

"Your actions in soliciting and accepting gifts from the Redskins for yourself and your family could reasonably be considered to be separate from or adverse to the best interests of the Tribe," The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah wrote in a six-page document alleging misconduct on her part.

Five members of the Tribe signed the document and Lafferty was reportedly asked to appear at a hearing Tuesday.

Washington has used the "Redskins" name since 1937. Snyder purchased the club in May 1999.
