Jameis Winston: 'I'm the best player in the draft'

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Most quarterback prospects throw about 60 passes at their pro days, but Jameis Winston topped that figure - by more than 40 passes.

Afterwards, Winston was asked why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should draft him. "Because I'm the best player in the draft," he said, according to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.

Winston looked competent, if unspectacular, in his workout. He moved relatively well in the pocket, occasionally avoiding - for some reason - a coach holding a broom and threw the ball with plenty of zip.

Asked if he made a good impression, Winston again boasted "I know I did."

Toward the end of his marathon session, Winston appeared fatigued. He soldiered on and finished with 91 completions on 102 pass attempts with five drops.

When he was finished, he celebrated with a little dance:

Ultimately, Winston's pro day performance will do little to affect his draft stock. His red flags have nothing to do with his ability to throw the ball. As we saw in his career at Florida State and the scouting combine in February, Winston has an NFL-capable arm.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Ryan Licht was in attendance and made it clear that Winston was in shape and hadn't gained weight following the season as some speculated.

"I think that puts a little bit of water on that, maybe puts that fire out," Licht said. "He showed his arm strength from Throw One to Throw 100 or whatever it was."

Assuming Winston checks all the boxes when teams examine his off-field history, he should expect to hear his name called early in the first round on April 30.
