Bills planning to focus on extension talks with Marcell Dareus after the draft

The Buffalo Bills were busy bringing in plenty of new talent during free agency, and now they will turn their attention to locking up one of their own.

Buffalo is hoping to ink defensive tackle Marcell Dareus to a contract extension and talks could begin before the draft, general manager Doug Whaley told Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News.

"In the near future," Whaley said. "He will be priority No. 1 once the dust settles post-draft, maybe even before then, just to get the ball rolling."

To make it happen, though, Whaley acknowledged he may have to ask Mario Williams to restructure his deal.

"He could free up the most and make it the most logical, because what we would do is not only restructure, but extend him similar to Kyle Williams, so these guys retire as Buffalo Bills," Whaley said. "We want to set a precedent that we retain our own and we have them retire as Buffalo Bills. I think that's a sentiment we're trying to show the players on our roster now."

Dareus will make more than $8 million this season if nothing changes, as Buffalo picked up his fifth-year option for 2014. The 25-year-old is coming off two straight Pro Bowl appearances and recorded an impressive 10 sacks last year.
