White Sox claim Kyle Drabek off waivers from Blue Jays

The Chicago White Sox announced Friday they claimed pitcher Kyle Drabek off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Drabek, who was not expected to win a spot in the Blue Jays bullpen this spring, spent five seasons in Toronto after he was acquired as one of the key pieces in the Roy Halladay deal with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009.

The Blue Jays exposed Drabek to waivers Thursday in case another team wanted to give him a look before training camp is over, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. The right-hander is out of minor league options and would have to clear waivers if the White Sox intend on sending him to Triple-A.

Drabek, who's pitched just 5 1/3 major-league innings over the last two seasons, has failed to rediscover the form that made him the 18th pick in the 2006 draft after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012. The 27-year-old owns a career 5.27 ERA and his struggles with control have resulted in a bloated 5.8 walks per nine innings.

Drabek's father, former major league pitcher Doug Drabek, spent his second-to-last season with the White Sox in 1997.

The White Sox placed reliever Nate Jones on the 60-day disabled list to clear room for Drabek on the roster.
