New women's hockey league will pay players

Women are finally going to get paid to play hockey in North America.

Thanks to the newly established National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) started by Dani Rylan and Angela Ruggiero, women will get the chance to make hockey into a career after college.

Jen Neale of Puck Daddy reports that league operations will generate income from sponsors, while the NWHL Foundation will act as a charitable wing of the organization, promoting grassroots hockey.

The league will have four teams: the Buffalo Beauts, Boston Pride, New York Riveters and Connecticut Whale.

Each team will be given an operating budget to pay all staff - including players, coaches and front office - and the league will operate under a salary cap.

The money will be minimal at first, with the salary cap for each team projected to be $270,000.

The NWHL says they have verbal agreements from over 20 players to join their league.
