Broncos, Demaryius Thomas working on long-term contract

The franchise tag the Denver Broncos placed on Demaryius Thomas may soon be a distant memory.

Denver is working on a long-term deal with Thomas, general manager John Elway said Monday.

"We're going to continue to work with (Thomas) and his agent to hopefully get something done for a long-term solution for him," Elway said. "We'd like him to remain a Denver Bronco, and that's one of our goals, to be able to get that done. I'm trying to get together with his agent, and hopefully we can do that. We'll continue to work diligently on trying to get something done."

The news isn't exactly a revelation, as this was likely the Broncos' plan all along. Denver opted to let Julius Thomas walk in free agency and had Peyton Manning restructure his deal. Both moves were presumably intended to free up cash so the Broncos could secure their top receiver with a new deal.

Thomas is currently counting $12.823 million against the cap because of the franchise tag, but that can be diminished if the two sides reach a new deal before July 15.
