Report: Jaguars' Marqise Lee suing insurance company over draft policy

Thomas J. Russo / USA TODAY Sports

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Marqise Lee was prepared for a fall in the draft, so he took out an insurance policy to prevent a financial loss.

Lee paid Lloyd's of London $94,600 before his junior year at USC, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN. The policy would cover Lee should an injury negatively affect his draft standing, causing him to sign a deal worth less than $9.6 million.

Sure enough, a knee injury slowed him in the 2013 season and he was a second-round pick. His rookie deal was worth $5.17 million.

Lee planned to collect the difference of $4.5 million on Tuesday from Lloyd's, but was denied. He then filed a lawsuit, according to Rovell.

The challenge for Lee will be proving that the injury caused him to fall in the draft. He still played 11 games during the 2013 season.

If Lee wins his case, Rovell believes he would be the first player to collect on a loss-of-value policy.
