Bears face difficult decision with Jay Cutler's contract

Mike DiNovo / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears could be stuck between a rock and a hard place where Jay Cutler is concerned.

If Cutler remains on the Bears' roster on March 10, the team will owe him $10 million of his salary for the 2016 season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Conversely, if the Bears cut him, they'll still owe Cutler $15.5 million for this year.

The one way out of all of this is finding a taker on the trade market, which is becoming increasingly unlikely. Two teams that had an obvious need for a quarterback, the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills, opted to add Josh McCown and Matt Cassel, respectively.

Even if the Bears could trade Cutler, they would then find themselves without a suitable option behind center for 2014. That won't be an easy fix in the draft or through free agency.

Chicago's best bet is probably to keep Cutler and bank on new offensive coordinator Adam Gase finding a way to get him to play with some consistency.
