Maurice Jones-Drew is calling it a career.

The Oakland Raiders running back announced his retirement in a brief statement Thursday.

After much discussion with my family and business team during this offseason, I've decided to retire from the National Football League. The past nine years were absolutely amazing! I'll be forever grateful to the countless people who have assisted me throughout my NFL journey. To my fans, and NFL fans worldwide, you are the absolute greatest! But for you, our league would not exist. Football has been a central part of my life for the past 24 years. But, now I'm excited about and looking forward to the next chapter of my life.

The three-time Pro Bowler will best be remembered for his days as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, with whom he spent eight of his nine seasons.

Jones-Drew ran for more than 8,000 yards in his career and totaled 79 touchdowns. From 2009-2011, Jones-Drew had three consecutive campaigns with at least 1,300 yards rushing.

At just 5-foot-7, the undersized back carved out quite a career for himself.
