Report: Redskins keeping Kirk Cousins to compete with RGIII

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The Washington Redskins' quarterback situation in 2015 isn't going to look a whole lot different from last year.

Head coach Jay Gruden indicated in February that Robert Griffin III would begin the year as the starter, but he also wants to make sure Kirk Cousins pushes Griffin for the job, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network

Cousins has shown flashes of brilliance in parts of three seasons filling in for Griffin, but struggled with nine interceptions in six games last year.

Both were benched for Colt McCoy at times in 2014, who will likely sign elsewhere in free agency.

With the Buffalo Bills trading for Matt Cassel and the Cleveland Browns signing Josh McCown, it would have been interesting to see what value Cousins would have had in the trade market.

Still, given Griffin's injury history and inconsistent play, keeping Cousins around for insurance isn't the worst idea.
