Report: Ravens ask Lardarius Webb to take pay cut

James Lang-US PRESSWIRE / Reuters

In an apparent effort to create additional salary cap space heading into the offseason, the Baltimore Ravens are approaching veteran cornerback Lardarius Webb in hopes of reworking his contract.

Currently set to count $12 million against the 2015 salary cap, the Ravens are reportedly asking Webb to reduce his $8-million base salary, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

While a pay-cut request often results in the two sides parting ways, the Ravens wouldn't save much against the salary cap by cutting Webb and the move would leave the defense with a significant need at the cornerback position.

The six-year pro was much improved in the second half of 2014, and could re-establish himself as a valuable contributor if he can stay healthy going forward.

Of course, the Ravens appear to be hoping that he can do so at a reduced cost, making Webb's contract situation one worth monitoring in the coming weeks.
