Report: NFL considering expanding rosters from 53 to 55

Among the items on the agenda for the NFL Competition Committee's annual meetings is an examination of how many players a team should have at its disposal.

The committee will reportedly look at allowing all players on a team's roster to be active for Thursday games, but it may not stop there. According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the committee will also consider expanding in-season rosters from 53 players to 55.

Opposition to larger rosters has largely disappeared as the salary cap increases and rookie salaries have become standardized. Teams won't have much trouble fitting an additional two players under the cap.

There are other considerations before a rule change is implemented, of course, including how the addition of 64 rostered players across the league would impact the players union.

For now, roster expansion is merely an idea deemed worthy of debate by league's decision-makers.
