J.J. Redick on Three-Point Shootout violations: 'Couldn't be prouder'

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

He's not just a pretty face. He's got a sense of humor, too.

J.J. Redick had a laugh at his own expense late Saturday night, trying to shake off a curious performance in the Three-Point Shootout.

The Los Angeles Clippers shooting guard appeared to be having a solid round that would have put him on the fringes of making the finals. But when his final score went up on the board, it was missing a few points. Instead of scoring a 20, which would have been good for fifth (still shy of the final round), Redick had a 17 beside his name, better than only James Harden.

Apparently, threes are reviewed in the Three-Point Shootout as they are in regular games, and officials decided Redick's foot had been on the line for three of his makes.

Rather than be annoyed with the technicality, Redick - whose wrist always looks good, in the middle of his picture-perfect jump shot or off the court - took solace in the fact that he set a new record for the competition.

This was surprisingly Redick's first year competing in the event, despite posting a 39.6 percent career mark from outside and ranking 19th all-time in 3-point field goals made per-36 minutes. At 30 years old, Redick may have a Three-Point Shootout in his future still.

Failing that, he can compete with Monta Ellis and Avery Bradley in the first ever long-two competition.
